Reset the Tyre Pressure Monitor (TPMS)

These instructions apply to the Vauxhall Astra Mk7 (K/B16) 2015-2021.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The Vauxhall Astra K (Mk7, 2015–2021) — Opel Astra — uses a direct TPMS with a sensor in each wheel. For a simple low-pressure warning you just correct the pressures; a full sensor re-match (after a wheel change) needs a tyre shop’s tool. Here’s what to do. The amber tyre symbol coming on is normal after a pressure drop or a wheel change — it is a prompt to act, not a sign the car is broken.

How the Astra K’s System Works

Because the Astra K uses direct sensors, each wheel reports its own actual pressure — there is no baseline to store and no menu ‘reset’ step for a simple low tyre. Correct the pressures and the sensors themselves report the good readings, so the warning clears without any button-pressing. The one time the system needs human help is when the sensors’ wheel positions have moved, which is why a wheel swap is treated differently below.

Getting Ready

  • Check the tyres cold — before driving, or after the car has stood a few hours, for an honest reading.
  • Find the correct figures on the driver’s door-pillar label, and use the laden values if you’re loaded up.
  • Have a reliable gauge or pump — forecourt gauges can read a little off.
  • Include the spare if yours has a sensor-equipped full-size wheel.
  • Note if you’ve just swapped wheels — that changes the job (see below).

Low-Pressure Warning — Just Reinflate

If the warning came on because a tyre is low, you don’t need any reset:

  1. Set all four tyres to the correct pressure (cold) — the figure is on the driver’s door-pillar label.
  2. Drive a short distance. The sensors report the corrected pressures and the warning clears on its own.

After a Wheel Change or Rotation

The Astra K’s sensors are matched to specific wheel positions. If you’ve swapped or rotated wheels, or fitted new sensors, the system needs re-matching with a TPMS tool (the sensors are activated in a set order). This is a quick job at any tyre shop — it isn’t a dashboard menu step on this car.

If the Light Stays On

  • Re-check every tyre — one low corner keeps the warning on.
  • Give it a short drive — the sensors report as the wheels turn, so clearing isn’t always instant at a standstill.
  • Cold morning? Pressures drop overnight; top up to the label figure and drive.
  • Check the spare or space-saver if it carries a sensor — a low one there can trip the light.
  • Suspect a slow puncture if one corner keeps going down — have the tyre inspected rather than just re-inflating.
  • Steady-flashing TPMS light means a sensor isn’t being read (flat sensor battery or unmatched after a change) — that needs the tool.

What Happens Next

Once every tyre is at the right pressure, the light goes out within a short drive and stays off. If it returns, a tyre is losing air or a sensor is failing — check the pressures first, and if they’re fine, suspect a sensor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset the tyre pressure light on a Vauxhall Astra K?

For a low tyre, just reinflate to the correct pressure and drive — it clears itself. After a wheel swap, the sensors need re-matching with a TPMS tool.

Is there a dashboard reset?

No menu reset on the Astra K — the direct system clears a low-pressure warning automatically once pressures are right.

Why won’t the light go out after pumping the tyres up?

A tyre is still slightly off, or a sensor isn’t matched after a wheel change — the latter needs a tool.

Do I need a tool?

Only after changing/rotating wheels or fitting sensors — not for a simple reinflation.

Why did it come on in cold weather with no puncture?

Air contracts as it cools, so pressures read lower on a cold morning and can dip under the warning threshold overnight. It doesn’t mean a leak. Top all four up to the door-pillar figure while the tyres are cold and drive a short distance to clear it.

Can I keep driving with the tyre light on?

Drive gently to a safe place to check and inflate, but don’t ignore it. A markedly under-inflated tyre hurts grip and braking and can overheat at motorway speed, risking a blowout. Correct the pressures at the first opportunity, and if a corner keeps dropping have it looked at.
