The compass in the Charger’s overhead EVIC normally trims itself as you drive, but after a battery disconnect, a windshield replacement or a spell parked near something magnetic it can read “CAL” or point the wrong way. Two owner-level fixes cover almost every case: a manual calibration circle and a variance-zone setting that matches magnetic north to your part of the country. Both run from the console C/T button, and neither needs a tool.
How you know it needs doing
The clearest sign is a flashing or steady “CAL” in the compass window, but a heading that’s simply wrong — showing S when you’re driving north — is the same problem. On a Charger this most often follows windshield or roof-glass work, jump-starts, or aftermarket electronics mounted near the mirror. A wrong variance zone gives a subtler, persistent error: the compass tracks turns correctly but reads a constant number of degrees off, because the declination correction for your region is set wrong.
Calibrate the compass
- Turn the ignition to On.
- Press and hold the C/T button for about 2 seconds.
- Scroll to “MANUAL COMPASS CALIBRATION”.
- Press FUNCTION SELECT to start; “CAL” appears in the display.
- Drive one or two slow, complete circles on level ground, away from large metal objects and power lines, taking at least 16 seconds. “CAL” disappears once it calibrates.
Set the variance zone
- Look up your zone number on the variance map for your region.
- Turn the ignition On and press and hold C/T for about 2 seconds.
- Scroll to “COMPASS VARIANCE”; it shows the current zone.
- Press FUNCTION SELECT until your zone number is displayed.
- Press C/T to exit, then confirm the headings now read correctly.
Why it drifts
The compass reads the earth’s field through a sensor in the roof, and that steel can pick up a residual magnetic charge from body repairs, magnetic tools, or a jump-start surge. Calibration re-learns the offset; the variance setting corrects for how far true north sits from magnetic north where you live. Do the calibration circles in an open lot — not a multi-storey, not hemmed in by other cars, rebar or overhead lines, all of which distort the field and bake in a bad reading.
If the compass shows nothing
A completely blank window — no heading and no “CAL” — means the roof panel has become magnetised and needs professional degaussing with a special tool; that’s a workshop job, not a driveway fix, and re-driving circles won’t help. Keep hands off the C/T button while driving and do the circles at walking pace on level ground clear of traffic. As long as a direction shows, even a wrong one, the calibrate-and-variance routine above is all the Charger needs.
