The Charger’s BeltAlert system is on from the factory: if the driver hasn’t fastened the belt soon after pulling away, it chimes repeatedly and flashes a reminder. Plenty of owners leave it be, but if the persistent chime nags at you every time you nose the car out of the drive, it’s easy to switch off — and just as easy to switch back on — using only the seat belt and the ignition switch. No scan tool needed.
How you know you can change it
The behaviour you can toggle is the one that keeps chiming for several seconds after you’ve already set off unbelted, on top of the brief warning at start-up. That repeating stage is BeltAlert. When you finish the routine correctly the car sounds one short chime to confirm it flipped the setting — that single beep is your only feedback, so listen for it.
- With the ignition Off (any position other than On or Start), buckle the driver’s seat belt.
- Turn the ignition to On and let the belt reminder run its course — roughly six seconds.
- Unbuckle and re-buckle the driver’s belt three or more times, ending with the belt buckled.
- Turn the ignition Off (any position except On or Start). A single chime confirms BeltAlert has toggled — on to off, or off to on.
The basic belt warning stays on
This procedure changes only the enhanced BeltAlert reminder — the extra chiming and light that carry on after you set off. The basic belt-warning lamp and its brief start-up chime are mandated by law and remain active no matter what you set here. That first warning can’t be defeated, and shouldn’t be. If you later want the full reminder back — handy when a teen or an occasional driver borrows the car — just run the same routine again to flip it on.
If it doesn’t work
- You have 60 seconds from turning the ignition On to complete every step; run over that and the setting won’t change. Know the steps before you begin and keep moving.
- Finish with the belt buckled — ending on an unbuckled belt leaves BeltAlert as it was.
- Make three or more complete buckle-then-unbuckle cycles; hurried half-clicks may not count.
- No confirmation chime usually means the clock ran out — turn the ignition fully off and rerun from step 1, a touch quicker.
Only do this parked, and bear in mind that silencing BeltAlert changes nothing about the physics — buckling up is still the single biggest thing protecting you in a crash.
