The steering angle sensor (SAS) on the Opel Zafira Tourer (also Vauxhall Zafira Tourer in the UK, P12 chassis, 2011–2019) feeds wheel-position data to several systems: ESP and ABS for yaw stability, the electric power steering (EPS) for assist tuning, the lane-keep assist (on equipped trims) for lane-boundary detection, and the headlight steering on cars fitted with Adaptive Forward Lighting. After a battery disconnect, alignment work, or any steering-related repair, the SAS often loses its centre reference. The Tourer’s procedure differs subtly from the Zafira B — most notably it requires the engine running rather than ignition-only.
Before you start
The Zafira Tourer’s SAS is integrated into the steering column near the EPS motor. It communicates with the ESP module over the chassis CAN bus and with the EPS over a private serial link. The manual re-zero procedure described here works on Tourers fitted with EPS (all standard trims). Cars with hydraulic power steering — extremely rare on the Tourer — use a different procedure that’s identical to the Zafira B’s.
- Engine must be running. The Tourer’s EPS module only enters calibration-ready state when it’s seeing the alternator’s output above 13 V; ignition-only doesn’t satisfy the gate.
- Vehicle stationary on level ground. A slope skews the lateral-G baseline the ESP cross-checks against the SAS.
- Wheels actually straight ahead. Check visually — look at the front wheels and at the wheel emblem.
- Smooth, slow steering inputs. Jerky sweeps confuse the SAS encoder; aim for 3 seconds per lock direction.
- Tyres at the correct pressures. Mismatched pressures or low pressures cause the car to drift, which makes the post-procedure verification unreliable.
Tools required
None for the standard manual procedure. Optional:
- OP-COM or Vauxhall-aware scan tool — needed only if the manual procedure refuses to take, or if the EPS module has logged a “calibration required” code
When this procedure is needed
- After disconnecting or replacing the 12 V battery.
- After a wheel alignment or any suspension repair.
- When steering-related warning lights (ESP, ABS, EPS) remain illuminated.
- After replacing or working on the electric power steering motor or column.
- After replacing the SAS unit itself.
Re-initialization procedure
This procedure applies to Zafira Tourer variants without ESP-extended and equipped with the standard electric power steering (EPS).
- Park on level ground with the wheels visibly pointing straight ahead.
- Start the engine and let it idle. Wait until the cluster has gone through its self-test (about 5 seconds) and the EPS warning has extinguished (a few seconds after the cluster settles).
- Slowly turn the steering wheel fully to the left stop. About 3 seconds from straight to full lock. Don’t bump the stop hard — gentle approach.
- Slowly turn the steering wheel fully to the right stop. Same speed.
- Return the steering wheel to the centre position (spokes horizontal). Don’t go past the centre on either side during the return.
- Switch the ignition OFF. The calibration is committed during the shutdown sequence.
- The SAS re-initialization is now complete.
- Confirm with a short drive: 200 m of straight-line driving above 20 km/h, then a few gentle turns. The ESP and EPS warning lamps should remain off.
How to verify it has worked
- ESP, ABS, and EPS warning lamps are not illuminated on the next start.
- The steering does not feel “off-centre” — when driving straight on a level road with the wheel centred, the car should hold its line without manual correction.
- If you have a scan tool capable of reading SAS live data, the angle should be 0° ± 2° with the wheel straight ahead.
- Traction control intervenes correctly when you accelerate gently on a low-grip surface (wet tarmac, gravel) — the icon flashes briefly.
- The lane-keep assist (on equipped cars) interprets lane lines correctly during a brief test on a marked road.
Troubleshooting
EPS warning lamp stays on after the procedure. The EPS module has logged a stored “calibration required” code that won’t clear via the manual re-zero. Read with OP-COM or a Vauxhall-aware scan tool; the typical fix is to perform the manual procedure and then clear the code with the scanner.
Steering pulls to one side after the procedure. Not an SAS issue. The SAS only records the wheel position; if the wheels are out of physical alignment with the car’s geometry, the car still pulls. A full four-wheel alignment is needed.
ESP warning flashes intermittently when cornering. The yaw sensor (located under the centre console) is disagreeing with the SAS over what the car is doing. This is most often the SAS itself failing or the yaw sensor drifting — both are known wear items on the Tourer at high mileage. A scan tool reading will identify which is at fault.
Procedure doesn’t seem to do anything. The SAS module on the Tourer’s revised 2015-facelift cars sometimes requires a scan-tool-initiated calibration rather than just lock-to-lock sweeps. The manual procedure works on all pre-2015 cars; for 2015+ Tourers, do the procedure then clear any pending codes with OP-COM.
Warning lights re-illuminate after 100 m of driving. The dynamic verification has failed — the SAS reading isn’t matching the wheel-speed-derived yaw rate. This usually points to a tracking problem (the wheels aren’t actually straight when the steering wheel is centred). Get an alignment check.
Frequently asked questions
Does this procedure work on the Vauxhall Zafira Tourer (UK)?
Yes — same car, same procedure, only the badge differs.
Why does the Tourer need the engine running when the Zafira B doesn’t?
The Tourer’s EPS module won’t enter calibration mode without confirmed alternator voltage above 13 V. The Zafira B used hydraulic power steering on most trims, which doesn’t have this gate. The Tourer’s all-electric steering shifts the calibration gate upstream.
Will this procedure clear the “FlexRide” warning on AGR-spec cars?
No. FlexRide and the AGR-suspension warnings are separate from the SAS — they have their own calibration that requires a scan tool. The SAS re-zero won’t affect them.
What if I have the Zafira Tourer with the 4×4 option?
The 4×4 Tourer (rare on this generation) uses the same SAS and the same re-initialization procedure. The 4×4 system adds drivetrain torque-vectoring inputs but doesn’t change the SAS calibration.
How long until the warning lights clear after the procedure?
Immediate clear on the next ignition cycle if the manual procedure was successful. If the lamps clear only after 100 m of driving, that’s normal — the ESP module needs to see a confirming dynamic cycle before committing the calibration.
Can I do this procedure with the engine cold?
Yes — engine temperature doesn’t affect the SAS reading or the EPS calibration gate. The engine just needs to be running.
