Put the Windscreen Wipers in Service Position

These instructions apply to the Opel Zafira Mk3 (P12) 2011-2019. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: May 17, 2026

The Opel Zafira Tourer (P12 chassis, also sold as the Vauxhall Zafira Tourer in the UK, 2011–2019) parks its windscreen wipers in a position that overlaps the trailing edge of the bonnet seal. This is normal: it protects the rubber blades from UV when the car is parked, but it makes blade changes awkward — you can’t lift the arm clear of the bonnet without bonnet damage or arm strain. The factory solution is a service-position routine that drives the wipers up to a vertical, fully-exposed position, holds them there until you switch off, and returns them to park on the next ignition cycle.

Before you start

The wiper service position is a soft-coded function controlled by the body control module — it’s available on all Zafira Tourer trims regardless of engine. Cars with rain-sensor automatic wipers use the same procedure as cars with the conventional stalk-only setup; the rain sensor is a separate input layer that doesn’t affect this function.

  • Bonnet must be fully closed. The BCM looks at the bonnet-ajar microswitch. If it sees the bonnet open, the wiper command is suppressed for safety — exactly when you don’t want it, but the logic is intended to prevent the wipers slamming into a raised bonnet.
  • All doors must stay closed during the 4-second window. Opening any door interrupts the BCM’s command timer.
  • Do not remove the ignition key during the procedure. Cars with the keyless option behave the same — the key needs to remain inside the cabin.
  • Don’t activate the service position with the wipers running. Wait until the wipers have parked in the normal lower position before starting.
  • Best done in mild temperatures. Frozen blades can stick to the screen; trying to lift them by force when the wipers are powered up can strip the wiper-motor gears.

Tools required

None for the procedure. To actually replace the blades:

  • Replacement wiper blades to the correct length (driver-side 750 mm, passenger-side 700 mm on standard Zafira Tourer; check the manufacturer’s fitment guide for trim-specific variations)
  • Clean cloth and screen cleaner for the windscreen surface

Service-position procedure

  1. Park the car on level ground and close the bonnet fully. Check that the bonnet release in the cabin is back to the latched (un-pulled) position — if it’s pulled out, the bonnet microswitch reads “ajar”.
  2. Switch the ignition ON by pressing the START button once without your foot on the brake (push-button start) or turning the key to position II (mechanical key).
  3. Switch the ignition OFF again. The dashboard goes dark.
  4. Within 4 seconds of switching OFF, push the wiper stalk downwards — the position you would normally use to make the wipers do a single sweep. Hold for half a second, then release.
  5. The wipers will move automatically to the service position — almost fully vertical, with the blades pointing upwards and clear of the bonnet edge. The motor stops once the blades reach the position.
  6. You can now lift the wiper arms away from the screen to replace the blades without fouling the bonnet.
  7. To return the wipers to their normal park position, switch the ignition ON and operate the wiper stalk normally (any wash or wipe command will do, then let the wipers park themselves).

How to verify it has worked

  • The wiper arms have moved from the lower park position to a roughly vertical position with the blades pointing up and clear of the bonnet line.
  • The wipers stay in this position with the ignition off and don’t drift back down (unless the ignition is cycled).
  • The arms can be lifted freely away from the glass with no resistance from the wiper motor’s parking pawl.

Troubleshooting

The wipers don’t move when you push the stalk down within the 4-second window. Most likely cause: the 4-second timer started counting from when you pushed START rather than from the OFF action. Try again — switch ON, then OFF, then count “one-two” mentally before pulling the stalk down. Second most likely: the bonnet microswitch is reading “ajar” — slam the bonnet down with a firm push to ensure the catch is fully home.

The wipers move part of the way to the service position and stop. The motor has detected resistance higher than its protective threshold. Common cause in winter: the blades are frozen to the screen. Free them with a defrost cycle (run the engine and let the heater warm the windscreen for 5 minutes) before retrying.

The wipers go to the service position but on the next ignition ON they go back to normal park immediately, before you can replace the blades. The BCM keeps service-position state for the current ignition cycle only. Switch ignition ON only after you have finished the blade change and reseated everything.

After the blade change and returning to normal mode, the wipers park in the wrong position (high or low). The motor has lost its park-position reference. Run a single intermittent wipe and let the wipers complete a full cycle and park themselves. They will return to the correct park position on the second sweep.

Pushing the stalk down within the window does a single wipe instead of activating service position. The ignition cycle wasn’t recognised — most often because you pressed START twice quickly instead of once. Single press to go to ignition ON, single press to go OFF. With a mechanical key, turn to II and back to OFF.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn’t the Zafira Tourer use a simple “park up” mode like older cars?
The hidden-park position protects the wiper rubber from UV exposure between uses, which extends blade life by approximately 30% versus an exposed-park system. The service-position routine is the manufacturer’s compromise — it gives you full access when you need it without sacrificing the daily benefit.

Does the same procedure work on the Vauxhall Zafira Tourer (UK)?
Yes — Opel Zafira Tourer and Vauxhall Zafira Tourer are identical apart from badging and minor trim items. Same BCM, same procedure.

What about the older Zafira B?
The Zafira B (2005–2014) uses a different BCM and has its own service-position routine. The Tourer’s 4-second-after-off-and-stalk-down sequence does not work on the Zafira B.

Will the wipers come on by themselves if it rains during the blade change?
Cars with the rain-sensor option: no, because the ignition is off and the rain sensor is dormant. Cars with the standard intermittent stalk: also no, because the wipers only run when the stalk is in a wipe position and the ignition is on.

How often should I be doing this?
Only when changing the wiper blades. The Zafira Tourer’s wipers should be changed every 12 months or when streaking becomes noticeable, whichever comes first. Quality blades (Bosch Aerotwin or similar) last the full 12 months; cheaper blades may need replacing twice a year.

If a dashboard warning appears related to wipers (rare on this car), see autodtcs.com for code-specific guidance.
