Disconnecting the 12 V battery on a Skoda Octavia Mk4 (NX, 2020–present) is a straightforward engine-bay job. This guide covers safe disconnection, reconnection, and the few things to re-teach afterwards — plus the battery-registration note that matters if you’re fitting a new one.
Where the Battery Is
The 12 V battery is in the engine bay, under a plastic cover. (The Octavia iV plug-in hybrid also has a high-voltage battery — workshop-only; only the engine-bay 12 V is owner-serviceable.)
Disconnecting
- Turn the ignition off and remove the key (or keep a keyless fob out of range).
- Loosen the negative (−, black) terminal first and lift the lead clear.
- If removing the battery, loosen the positive (+, red) next, then the hold-down clamp.
Airbag/pretensioner safety: if you’ll be near airbags or seat-belt pretensioners, turn the ignition on (do not start), then off, and wait 1 minute after disconnecting before continuing.
Reconnecting & Re-teaching
- Reconnect positive (+) first, then negative (−) last; tighten and refit the cover.
- Re-initialise the power windows — see our Octavia window guide.
- Reset the clock and check your infotainment/driver settings.
Fitting a new battery? The Octavia’s energy-management tracks battery condition, so a different/new battery should be registered (coded) with a VW-Group tool such as VCDS or OBDeleven so smart charging and start/stop work correctly — especially if you change type (EFB↔AGM) or capacity. A simple disconnect/reconnect of the same battery doesn’t need it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which terminal first on the Octavia?
Always the negative (−) first, and reconnect it last.
Do I have to code a new battery?
For a like-for-like swap it’ll run, but for correct charging the new battery should be registered with VCDS/OBDeleven.
Will I lose my radio?
No — the Octavia Mk4’s infotainment isn’t code-locked; just reset the clock.
Why don’t my windows auto-close afterwards?
Cutting power clears their learned closed position. Run the quick re-initialise to restore one-touch.
For any warning light that stays on, look up the code on autodtcs.com. To clear the service reminder, see our Octavia Mk4 service reset guide.
