These instructions apply to the Honda Accord Mk8 (CU/CW) 2008-2015.

On the eighth-generation Accord (CU/CW) the 12V battery sits in the engine compartment. Disconnecting it is straightforward, but the car loses a few settings — most importantly the audio system locks until you re-enter its security code — so note that code before you start.

How to disconnect and reconnect the battery on a Honda Accord (2008–2015)
- Turn off the ignition and all electrical consumers (lights, climate, audio). Make sure you have the audio security code to hand.
- At the battery in the engine bay, slacken and remove the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive (+).
- If you will be working near the airbags or seat-belt pretensioners, wait 3 minutes after disconnecting before touching them.
- Reconnect in reverse: positive (+) first, then negative (−). Tighten both clamps fully.
- Switch the ignition to ON and restore the lost settings: re-enter the radio code, reset the clock, and re-initialize the power windows.
Always disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last — this stops a spanner shorting the live positive to the bodywork. A memory-saver plugged into the 12V socket keeps the radio code and presets alive, but it is not essential.
After reconnecting, the one-touch auto-up window function usually stops working until it is re-taught. Our power window reset guide covers that quick step.
Frequently asked questions
Will I lose my radio code?
Yes. The audio unit locks when it loses power and asks for its security code. The code is on a card in the service book or can be retrieved from a Honda dealer using the car’s details, so find it before disconnecting.
Which terminal do I remove first?
The negative (−) first, every time. Reconnect it last. Working on the earthed side first means a slipped tool cannot short the battery through the chassis.
What else needs resetting afterward?
The clock, the radio stations and code, and the power-window auto-up. Cars with a powered sunroof may also need the roof re-initialized.
