Reset the Service Indicator

These instructions apply to the Mini Cooper Mk3 (F55/F56) 2013-2024. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: May 17, 2026

The Mini Cooper Mk3 (F55 5-door / F56 3-door, 2013–2024) — the third-generation BMW-era Mini built in Oxford (UK), sold in a broad trim spread covering Mini One (B38A12A 1.2 petrol), Cooper (B38A15A/B38A15F 1.5 petrol three-cylinder), Cooper D (B37C15A 1.5 diesel three-cylinder), Cooper S (B46A20A/B48A20A 2.0 petrol four-cylinder), Cooper SD (B47C20A 2.0 diesel), JCW John Cooper Works (B48A20A tuned, 170/170/170+ kW depending on year), and the Cooper SE Electric (2020+) — uses BMW’s Condition Based Service (CBS) system shared across the F-series Mini and BMW range. CBS tracks multiple service items independently (engine oil, brake fluid, micro-filter, spark plugs, vehicle inspection, etc.) and each is reset separately. There are three methods depending on trim and preference, all owner-accessible — no diagnostic tool needed.

When to Reset the Service Indicator

  • After completing any CBS-tracked service item — engine oil, brake fluid, brake pads, vehicle inspection, spark plugs, micro-filter (cabin filter), engine air filter.
  • If the cluster shows “Service required” or names a specific item (e.g. “Engine oil”) with a countdown distance / time at startup.

⚠️ CBS tracks each item separately. Only reset the item(s) you’ve actually serviced — clearing items you haven’t touched throws off the next service schedule. The cluster displays items in priority order (most overdue first).

Before You Start

  • Park on a level surface with the engine off, then turn the ignition on without starting (press START once without the brake — first press wakes the cluster, second press starts the engine).
  • Complete the actual service work before the reset.
  • Identify your cluster + infotainment trim. Three methods apply:
    • Method 1 — Trip-recorder button hold (works on all F55/F56): Uses the small trip-recorder button on the steering column / cluster.
    • Method 2 — Start/stop + trip-recorder (alternative): Same trip-recorder button but with a different start sequence.
    • Method 3 — iDrive / Mini Connected menu: Uses the centre-console rotary controller and the MENU button (cars with Mini Visual Boost or Mini Yours Connected / Mini Connected).
  • Locate the trip-recorder button for Methods 1 and 2 — small button on the lower-left of the speedometer / central nacelle on the F56 / on the steering column below the cluster on F55.

Tools and Supplies

None for the reset itself. For an oil change, fresh Mini-spec oil — 0W-30 ACEA C3 / BMW Longlife-12 FE / BMW Longlife-14 FE+ on the 1.5 B38 and 2.0 B46/B48 petrol engines; 0W-30 ACEA C3 / BMW Longlife-04 on the B37/B47 diesel engines. A new cartridge filter (cap-style filter housing on top of the engine — different cap sizes by engine code, 32 mm hex typical on B38/B48); sump-plug torque 25 Nm on B-series engines. Capacity: 1.5 B38 takes 4.25 L with filter; 2.0 B48 takes 5.25 L; 1.5 B37 diesel takes 4.0 L; 2.0 B47 diesel takes 5.0 L. The Cooper SE Electric (no engine oil) tracks brake fluid, micro-filter, and inspection via CBS instead.

Method 1 — Trip-Recorder Button (Standard)

  1. Turn the ignition ON (engine off — press START once without depressing the brake).
  2. Press and hold the trip-recorder button. Continue holding.
  3. Wait 10 seconds. The cluster will display the service items in priority order (most overdue first).
  4. Use the cluster controls to select the service item you’ve performed (e.g. “Engine oil”).
  5. Press and hold the trip-recorder button again.
  6. Wait 3 seconds, then release.
  7. ‘Reset?’ appears on the display.
  8. Press the trip-recorder button briefly.
  9. Press and hold the button again to confirm the reset.
  10. Wait 3 seconds. ‘Reset successful’ appears on the display.
  11. The service item is now reset. Repeat from step 4 if you have other completed service items to reset.
  12. Turn the ignition off.

Method 2 — Trip-Recorder Button (Alternative, with Start/Stop Wake)

  1. Turn the ignition ON.
  2. Press the start/stop button quickly 3 times.
  3. Press and hold the trip-recorder button.
  4. Keep the button pressed for 10 seconds. The first service item will be shown.
  5. Release the button.
  6. The service indicator now shows the remaining km/time until the next service for that item.
  7. To proceed to the next item: tap the trip-recorder button briefly to cycle through the items, repeating for each.
  8. On the item you want to reset, press the trip-recorder button briefly — ‘Reset possible’ appears.
  9. ‘Perform reset?’ appears.
  10. Release the trip-recorder button, then press and hold for 3 seconds.
  11. ‘Reset successful’ appears.
  12. Procedure complete. Turn the ignition off.

Method 3 — iDrive / Mini Connected Menu (Touchscreen Trims)

For Mini F56 cars with the Mini Visual Boost 6.5-inch display or the Mini Yours / Connected 8.8-inch display:

  1. Turn the ignition ON.
  2. Press the MENU button on the centre-console controller (the rotary knob between the seats).
  3. Turn the knob repeatedly to scroll through the main menu list.
  4. Select ‘Vehicle information’. Confirm by pressing the knob.
  5. Turn the knob to scroll.
  6. Select ‘Vehicle status’. Press the knob to confirm.
  7. Turn the knob to scroll.
  8. Select ‘Service requirements’. Press the knob to confirm.
  9. Scroll through the list — the display now lists every CBS-tracked service item with its remaining km/time.
  10. Select the required service item from the menu.
  11. Confirm the selection by pressing the knob.
  12. The car will prompt you to set the time until the next service (effectively the reset interval — leave at the default to use the standard CBS schedule).
  13. Press the knob to confirm. Reset complete.

Verify the Reset Worked

Switch the ignition off, wait 30 seconds, then cycle back on. The cluster should no longer show the service-required warning for the item(s) you reset. Open the CBS menu again (Method 3 path) or press the trip-recorder briefly — the item should now show a fresh full interval. Typical CBS intervals for the F56 Mini:

  • Engine oil (petrol B38/B46/B48): up to 20,000 miles (32,000 km) or 24 months — Condition-Based, often shorter on short-trip cars.
  • Engine oil (diesel B37/B47): up to 22,000 miles (35,000 km) or 24 months.
  • Engine oil (JCW B48 tuned): up to 12,500 miles (20,000 km) or 24 months — shortened for the high-output tune.
  • Brake fluid: 24 months from last change.
  • Spark plugs (petrol): 60,000 miles (100,000 km).
  • Vehicle inspection: 24 months (or by CBS algorithm).
  • Cooper SE Electric (no engine oil): Brake fluid 24 months, micro-filter 24 months, inspection 24 months.

The CBS algorithm shortens the oil interval based on cold starts, short trips, and driving style — UK city use typically signals at 8,000–12,000 miles even on petrol.

Troubleshooting

  • (Method 1/2) The trip-recorder button doesn’t bring up the CBS list. Confirm the ignition is fully ON (start/stop pressed once without brake). On cluster-only trims without the central LCD, the CBS list cycles on the small message line below the speedometer — easy to miss; look at the right-hand side of the speedo nacelle.
  • (Method 3) Mini iDrive doesn’t have a Service requirements menu. On very early F56s with the standard Mini Visual Boost (no Connected package) the menu is labelled “Vehicle status” directly without the intermediate Vehicle information step. The reset path is otherwise the same.
  • ‘Reset?’ appears but I can’t confirm. The confirmation requires releasing and pressing again — a single continuous press doesn’t trigger it. Tap briefly to confirm, then hold to commit.
  • I reset the oil but the warning returns immediately. 12V battery condition. The F56 cluster is particularly sensitive to weak 12V — load-test; replace if older than 4 years on Start-Stop AGM-equipped cars. The Mini AGM is in the boot, not under the bonnet.
  • Cooper SE Electric — same procedure? Yes for all three methods. The SE Electric has no engine-oil item in the CBS list (it shows N/A or simply omits the row), but brake fluid, micro-filter, and inspection items use the same reset path.
  • JCW John Cooper Works — same procedure? Yes. The JCW uses the same cluster and CBS system. Its shorter oil interval is built into the CBS schedule.
  • The reset takes but the message comes back after a few hundred miles. The CBS algorithm may not have updated the EEPROM. Drive the car for at least 15 minutes after the reset and switch off properly — don’t cycle the ignition rapidly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the spanner / wrench symbol on the Mini F56 mean?

On the F56 Mini the spanner / wrench icon (often shown alongside a specific service-item name like “Engine oil” or “Brake fluid”) is the Condition-Based Service reminder. Different from BMW’s similar system in name only — same underlying logic. The icon does not indicate an engine fault.

Do I need a diagnostic tool?

No, all three methods are owner-accessible. The BMW ISTA / Mini dealer tool can also reset CBS items via OBD-II, but it isn’t required.

Does the reset clear engine fault codes?

No. The reset zeros the CBS counters only. Engine fault codes need a scan tool. For DTC interpretation see autodtcs.com.

What’s the difference between the three methods?

All three methods perform the same reset — they’re alternate paths through the same CBS firmware. Method 1 is the most universal (works on every F56). Method 2 is sometimes documented in older Mini manuals as the “service” reset path. Method 3 uses the iDrive-style centre console controller for cars with the larger touchscreen — cleaner UI but requires the Connected package.

Is the procedure the same as BMW F-series cars?

Very similar. BMW F10 5 Series, F30 3 Series, and other F-chassis cars use the same CBS firmware family with near-identical reset menus. The Mini F56 adapts the BMW iDrive menu paths to the Mini’s “speedometer nacelle” cluster, but the underlying CBS system is shared. The Mini F55 5-door uses the same procedure as the F56 3-door.

How often does the Mini service indicator come up?

Depends on the CBS algorithm’s read of your driving. Petrol oil change typically arrives at 10,000–20,000 miles or 24 months. Brake fluid is always 24 months from last change. Vehicle inspection is a separate 24-month item. UK city driving usually triggers oil change at the shorter end of the range due to cold-start adaptation.

What about the Mini R56 (2006–2013) and the new F65/F66 (2024+)?

The R56 uses the older N-series BMW engine line with a simpler service-indicator system — different menu structure, also accessible via the trip button but with a 5-second hold rather than the F56’s multi-stage approach. The new F65/F66 (2024–) introduces the OLED circular display and a redesigned reset path. We’ll publish dedicated R56 and F65/F66 guides.
