Home/Mini/Cooper/Mk3 (F55/F56) 2013-2024/Reset a Frozen Infotainment Screen

Reset a Frozen Infotainment Screen

These instructions apply to the Mini Cooper Mk3 (F55/F56) 2013-2024. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 10, 2026

If the centre screen in your MINI Cooper (F55/F56, 2013–2024) has frozen, gone black, or fallen into a restart loop where the MINI logo keeps reappearing, you can force a clean reboot yourself in well under a minute — no tools, no garage.

How MINI’s system relates to BMW iDrive

The third-generation MINI hatch (F56) and its five-door sister (F55) use BMW’s iDrive platform under the name MINI Connected, shown on the big circular centre dial display. The hardware and the reboot trick are essentially BMW’s, but the console layout is pure MINI: instead of BMW’s tidy knob-plus-controller cluster, the MINI has its row of toggle switches and a rotary controller on the console between the seats, with a volume/power control near the bottom of the toggle bank. That volume/power control is what you hold to restart the display.

Soft reset (reboot) the MINI Connected screen

Do this parked, with the ignition on so the system stays powered.

  1. Find the volume/power control — the round knob that turns the audio up and down and switches the system on and off.
  2. Press and hold it. Keep holding past the point where the audio mutes — that is normal.
  3. MINI’s own guidance is to hold for around 40 seconds (give it up to a minute) until the screen goes black.
  4. When the MINI logo appears as the system reboots, release the control.
  5. Wait 30–60 seconds for the home screen to return; audio and the rotary controller should respond again.

It is the equivalent of restarting a phone — a stuck software process is cleared, and nothing else changes.

Will this erase anything? No

The hold-to-reboot is safe. It does not delete your radio presets, navigation favourites, paired phones, or any settings. The head unit simply reloads its software. Do it as often as you need.

If the screen stays frozen or keeps rebooting

  • Hold longer. If 40 seconds didn’t take, repeat and hold for a full minute or more until the screen blacks out and the MINI logo returns.
  • Check the 12V battery first. The F55/F56 reboot loop is very often a weak or failing battery — the display browns out when voltage drops, especially on cold mornings or short trips. Many owners cured a constant reboot simply by replacing a tired battery. Have it load-tested.
  • Cycle the ignition fully. Switch off, lock the car with the fob, and walk away for about five minutes so the electronics sleep; then unlock and restart.
  • Get the software updated. A repeating reboot loop on the F56 is a well-known software bug, and a full MINI software update at a dealer or specialist is the fix that has cleared it permanently for most owners.

Factory reset (erases data — rarely needed)

A factory reset is separate from the reboot and only worth doing if you are selling the car or clearing a deep, persistent glitch. On the F56 it is in the MINI Connected menu under Settings → General settings → Reset vehicle data. It erases presets, paired phones, navigation history, and personal data, so only do it deliberately.

Frequently Asked Questions

My F56 screen keeps rebooting on its own every few minutes — what causes it?

On the F55/F56 this constant restart loop is most often a weak 12V battery or a known software bug. Have the battery load-tested first; if it’s healthy, a full MINI software update usually clears the loop for good.

Will the reboot lose my saved stations and paired phone?

No. Holding the volume/power control to restart keeps every preset, favourite, and pairing. Only a deliberate factory reset from the menu clears them.

MINI doesn’t have BMW’s knob layout — which control do I hold?

Hold the round volume/power control near the toggle switches on the console — the one that adjusts audio volume and turns the system on. That is MINI’s equivalent of the BMW iDrive power knob.

Is it safe to drive with the MINI screen frozen?

Yes. The display is independent of the engine and driving systems. You lose audio and navigation only; reboot when you are safely parked.

How long should I hold the control before it reboots?

MINI advises around 40 seconds, but give it up to a minute. If the screen hasn’t gone black and shown the MINI logo by then, release, wait, and try once more before looking at the battery or a software update.

If a warning light or fault message stays on the dash after the reboot, it may have stored a diagnostic trouble code — you can look it up on autodtcs.com.
